South of Leipzig, in the middle of an attractive lakeland setting, is the town of Markkleeberg. The two largest lakes, which lie right beside the town, are the Cospudener See and the Markkleeberger See. Water sports enthusiasts will be drawn to Europe’s most modern white water attraction in the canoe park on the Markkleeberger See, while hikers and cyclists will also find much to their liking. Golf fans will enjoy the 9-hole course by the Cospudener See and those with a more cultural inclination will love the beautifully designed agra park and the English garden in the Kees Park and the museums and theatres of this county town. The town features some charming examples of villa-style architecture, noble aristocratic residences and imposing 19th century buildings, as well as lots of leafy parkland. Markkleeberg is also one of the world’s most important sites for Stone Age artefacts. You can follow the GEOPFAD trail between the town and the Störmthaler See, which plots out the history of the archaeological finds in an interesting way. The town centre has a wealth of different shops and cosy cafés that invite you to linger a while. Markkleeberg is not just popular as a place to live – many small businesses have come to recognise the advantages of the town with its excellent connections and quick and easy access to Leipzig.
