The Baden-Württemberg city of Karlsruhe was planned and built in a fan shape based on a Baroque layout. At the centre of the fan is the classicist palace, with its attractive palace garden laid out in the style of an English landscape park. Karlsruhe is a dynamic university city and also an international technological centre. Numerous research institutes have settled in the city. Karlsruhe is characterised by a diverse cultural life and excellent recreational opportunities, which provide a high quality of life. The nearby Black Forest and the immediate closeness to France make Karlsruhe and its neighbouring towns very attractive residential areas. These include Eggenstein, Leopoldshafen, Weingarten and Bruchsal in the north and Ettlingen, Karlsbad and Bad Herrenalb to the south and south-east.
