The administrative district of Esslingen is in the south-west of Germany. The region is dominated by the natural landscape of the Swabian Jura and its foothills. Esslingen, situated on the Neckar and near the state capital of Stuttgart, combines tradition, such as the vineyards on the steeps slopes above the Neckar, with a modern economic life. Esslingen’s historic town centre, with its crooked lanes and the well-preserved city wall, boasts restored half-timbered houses and buildings of different architectural styles. The nearby town of Nürtingen also has an old centre with historical flair and is renowned for its guitar festivals, which are visited by famous musicians. The district of Esslingen also includes the town of Kirchheim unter Teck. An annual vintage aircraft meeting takes place here, attracting flight enthusiasts from all over Europe. Innovative and rapidly growing sectors are located in the towns of Filderstadt, Ostfildern and Leinfelden-Echterdingen. The excellent transport connections, and the natural landscape with its bathing lakes, vineyards and numerous cycling and hiking paths, provide a good quality of life in the district of Esslingen.
