The attractive countryside in the Berchtesgaden Region offers a wide range of leisure distractions at every time of year. Top skiing areas, the best conditions for climbing enthusiasts and golfers, hiking and cycling trails throughout the beautiful countryside as well as the Königssee lake, with a level of water quality that is amongst the best in Germany, all make the Berchtesgaden Region one of the most popular holiday regions in Germany. Its emblem is the 'Watzmann', the number one mountain in the district, which with a height of 2,713 metres is the highest point in the Berchtesgaden Region. Typical of the local countryside are the numerous medieval castles and chateaux. The historic prosperity of the towns of Traunstein, Berchtesgarden and Bad Reichenhall is based on salt production. One of the main historical sights in Bad Reichenhall is the Alte Saline, built by King Ludwig I in 1834, which is now home to a salt museum. The many salt springs in and around the town mean this spa town also offers a high recreational value. A superb educational and leisure offering and a very good infrastructure further contribute to the region's high quality of life. In addition there are also optimum transport links to neighbouring Austria, with the Mozart city of Salzburg - known internationally for its festival - as well as Salzburg Airport both within easy reach.
